I love the cold. It changes the practicalities of travel: batteries run down faster, fingers become clumsy, and even simple tasks take more time. In return, there is ice, snow, and a quality of light that is hard to find anywhere else.

These photographs were made on journeys to Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, Russia, and Lake Baikal. Svalbard’s light, in particular, keeps pulling me back. It hangs low in the sky for hours, shifts from blue to pink, and settles over mountains, fjords, and pack ice. That is why I travel to cold places.
